In December, 1979 Crazy Mama's opened as Columbus's defacto New-Wave nite club. It was a second floor bar on the southern edge of the south campus bar area. It was the first to show music videos on multiple monitors at a time before VHS cassettes. It hired DJ's like the fading disco club scene, but was opened to all of rock and roll, past and future. It was a small venue for bands, but members of local new-wave bands became the regular customers. As the above drink menu shows (a cut-out flier by Paul Volker), Crazy Mama's, run by Bruce Nutt and his brother Charlie, was focused on non-mainstream drinks. The guy is thinking and time sensitive. The girl is flirting and showing off her beauty, yet they don't connect. The guy is a drawing of a friend from Australia while the girl is actually a photo that my dad took in the early 1960's on a camera club model shoot. Screen printing is good for changing color from dark to light across a print used here.

The newer version showed a brick street and more realistic building in the background. I think there's something to be said for an oil painting with a touch of drama that people can relate to. People who do modern art have no reason to cry about not selling their works because art museums show what the old masters did to make popular works that sell.

There's deep etch, there's tape across the photo, burnishing of the light areas, etc. The original image was of a window at the old Monkey's Retreat (SohoZat) where they were selling wild 80's clothes with a mannequin with a mask.
The detail shows a lot of variety of treatments. The frozen look of the mannequin made me think of how the 1980's was a frozen decade for young people. Jobs were few and low pay, rent was going up, but people would just wear wilder and wilder clothes

I remember this being influenced by Egon Shiele. The image was done live from a fun-house mirror made from Chrome Mylar. My woodcut tools were stolen shortly afterwards when I took a trip to St. Louis, so the image is kind of appropriate.Testube Trayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03867644094821734000noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33878712.post-1157790372121608212006-09-09T04:22:00.000-04:002006-09-09T04:26:12.123-04:00Remembering 9 11This is a photo of the World Trade Center from a junk sculpture park in the Lower East Side of New York, back before gentrification.
